The Canadian company has developed a cement-free process for concrete production with a verified emissions reduction of over 100%.

Montreal, November 20, 2023 – CarbiCrete announced today that Enviro-access, a Canadian leader in the quantification of environmental impacts, has completed an environmental benefits report validating that CarbiCrete’s concrete block manufacturing process can eliminate more than 100% of the global warming potential (GWP) of concrete blocks, compared to those made using a conventional, cement-based process.

The cradle-to-gate report is based on data from CarbiCrete’s full-scale commercial manufacturing process in place at Patio Drummond’s concrete plant in Drummondville, Quebec. It was conducted in conformance with ISO 14064-2, which is used for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emission reductions and removals.

The report also showed that there are other environmental benefits associated with the implementation of the CarbiCrete process, such as the reduction of landfill waste, the conservation of primary materials and water savings.

“Our success as a leader in the decarbonization of the construction industry depends highly on our ability to quantifiably demonstrate the carbon impact of our technology,” says CarbiCrete CEO Chris Stern.

“This report conducted by Enviro-access, using industry-accepted standards, confirms that our process offers a real climate solution by reducing embodied carbon in concrete through both emissions avoidance and carbon removal through mineralization.”

CarbiCrete’s patented process replaces cement in the concrete mix with a steel-making by-product, avoiding cement-related emissions. Additionally, CarbiCrete’s concrete products are cured with carbon dioxide, which is mineralized and permanently removed from the atmosphere.

The company’s technology is currently being used by Canadian hardscape manufacturer Patio Drummond to produce carbon-negative blocks in Drummondville, Quebec.
