Funding will help accelerate the development and deployment of Carbicrete’s clean technology solution to greenhouse gas emissions through cement-free concrete production

Montreal, October 3, 2018 — Carbicrete has received $2.1M from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to help fund a project to optimize elements of its process to produce cement-free, carbon-negative concrete as it is integrated into an operational environment.

Carbicrete’s technology replaces cement in the concrete mix with steel slag, avoiding the emissions that come with cement production and uses CO2 instead of heat and steam to cure its concrete, enabling concrete makers to produce construction blocks, that are stronger, less expensive and that reduce manufacturers’ carbon footprint, as each block represents an avoidance of 2.5 kg of CO2 emissions.

The SDTC-funded project involves building a limited production facility at an existing concrete plant and ratcheting up production from pilot to commercial scale over the course of a 32-month period. Carbicrete has assembled a consortium of project partners that includes a concrete maker, an industrial gas company and steel slag handler.

“We are tremendously grateful to have the support of SDTC and the Government of Canada,” says Chris Stern, Carbicrete’s CEO. “This project is an important step in our bringing a cost-effective, cement-free concrete solution to the construction industry in Canada, and eventually the rest of the world. It is encouraging to see that there is substantial financial backing available to clean technology entrepreneurs through initiatives like SDTC.”

“We’re proud to support the innovative work of Carbicrete, tackling GHG emissions from the concrete industry by harnessing clean technology to produce cement-free, carbon-negative concrete,” says Leah Lawrence, President and CEO, Sustainable Development Technology Canada.

About Sustainable Development Technology Canada
Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) is a foundation created by the Government of Canada to advance clean technology innovation in Canada by funding and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises developing and demonstrating clean technology solutions.

About Carbicrete
