About CarbiCrete
CarbiCrete is a Montréal-based clean-technology company developing cement-free concrete products using steel slag and CO₂ curing. The company conducts applied research, materials testing, quality control, process development, and pilot-scale validation of low-carbon concrete technologies.
CarbiCrete is seeking a Materials Testing Technologist – Concrete R&D to support specialized testing, characterization, process development, and quality-control activities involving concrete, aggregates, steel slag, industrial mineral by-products, and carbon-cured construction materials.
Main Responsibilities
Construction Materials Testing and Quality Control
- Conduct and document laboratory testing of concrete, masonry materials, aggregates, steel slag, and other industrial mineral materials.
- Perform physical and mechanical testing including compressive strength, density, moisture, absorption, particle-size distribution, and other applicable durability or performance tests.
- Inspect and evaluate raw materials and finished concrete products against internal specifications, test methods, and applicable CSA or ASTM requirements.
- Identify material or process deviations and assist with technical investigations and corrective actions.
Concrete Mix and Materials Development
- Prepare, batch, and evaluate experimental concrete formulations incorporating steel slag, aggregates, mineral by-products, and alternative binder systems.
- Support the development and adjustment of mix designs based on material properties, workability, compaction behaviour, curing conditions, strength development, and product performance.
- Support laboratory-to-pilot-scale validation of new formulations and production procedures.
- Troubleshoot laboratory curing equipment, environmental sensors, gas-delivery systems, and associated data-acquisition equipment.
Materials Characterization
- Support characterization of steel slag, aggregates, alternative binders, and reacted materials using laboratory and analytical techniques.
- Interpret material-characterization results obtained from techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in support of concrete formulation and quality-control investigations.
- Correlate mineralogical, chemical, and physical material properties with concrete processing behaviour and product performance.
- Evaluate material variability between industrial raw-material sources and identify its potential effect on concrete production and curing.
Experimental Data Analysis and Technical Documentation
- Design and execute structured laboratory trials and experimental test matrices.
- Collect, validate, organize, and analyze experimental and quality-control data.
- Prepare graphs, technical summaries, test reports, laboratory records, SOPs, and experimental documentation.
- Compare experimental results across different raw materials, mix designs, curing conditions, and production trials.
- Maintain accurate traceability of samples, materials, test conditions, and laboratory results.
R&D Support
- Support pilot-scale concrete production and process-validation activities.
- Assist engineers and researchers with equipment setup, testing programs, technical investigations, and process-development projects.
- Coordinate laboratory testing with external laboratories, equipment suppliers, or technical service providers when required.
- Assist with calibration, maintenance, and verification of laboratory and pilot-scale testing equipment.
Required Qualifications
Education
A post-secondary qualification in a field directly related to construction materials or materials testing is required, such as:
- Materials Engineering or Materials Science;
- Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology;
- Chemical Engineering;
- Mining, Metallurgical, or Mineral Processing Engineering; or
- another closely related engineering or technical discipline involving construction or mineral materials.
A university engineering degree is considered an asset where it includes substantial laboratory or construction-materials experience.
Professional Experience
A minimum of 2 years of directly relevant hands-on laboratory or industrial experience involving construction materials, concrete, aggregates, mineral materials, or closely related materials-testing activities is required.
Candidates must have demonstrated experience in several of the following areas:
- concrete or cementitious-material laboratory testing;
- concrete mix preparation, adjustment, or optimization;
- aggregate or industrial mineral-material testing;
- steel slag or other metallurgical/mineral by-products;
- carbonation or controlled-gas curing of construction materials;
- operation of environmental or controlled-curing chambers;
- interpretation of XRD, XRF, TGA, or comparable materials-characterization data;
- quality-control testing of concrete or masonry products; and
- pilot-scale materials or process-development work.
Technical Requirements
The candidate must demonstrate:
- Hands-on ability to operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot construction-material testing equipment.
- Experience following standardized laboratory procedures and maintaining accurate experimental records.
- Ability to interpret numerical test results and identify relationships between raw-material characteristics, process conditions, and product performance.
- Experience preparing professional technical reports, laboratory documentation, graphs, and test summaries.
- Ability to work safely with industrial mineral materials, laboratory equipment, pressurized gases, and controlled environmental equipment.
- Working knowledge of applicable construction-material testing practices and familiarity with CSA, ASTM, or comparable testing standards.
Experience with experimental design, statistical analysis, automated data logging, laboratory instrumentation, Python, SQL, Minitab, or similar technical data-analysis tools is considered an asset.
Language
Ability to communicate effectively in English or French in a technical laboratory and workplace environment.
Work Environment
This is a hands-on laboratory and pilot-scale position based primarily at CarbiCrete’s Montréal facility. The position involves regular handling of concrete, aggregates, steel slag, laboratory samples, testing equipment, and pilot-scale processing equipment. The candidate should be comfortable with lifting up to 50lbs.
