Carbon offsets to be generated by the production of carbon-negative concrete

Montreal, August 9, 2021 – CarbiCrete announced today that it has entered into a Carbon Removal Purchase Agreement with Spin, the micromobility subsidiary of Ford Motor Company.

Spin will purchase 75 tonnes of blended abatement and removal credits that will be generated in 2022.

The agreement with CarbiCrete is the latest example of the company’s commitment to taking climate action. Spin recently announced that it is fully carbon neutral for all scopes of emissions.  According to Agendi, an independent third party, this makes Spin a carbon neutral company.

CarbiCrete’s carbon-negative process for the production of precast concrete replaces cement in concrete with steel slag and cures it with carbon dioxide, avoiding the GHG emissions associated with cement production, while permanently sequestering CO2 within the resulting concrete products. For every ton of concrete produced using this process, 150 kg of CO2 are abated/removed.

“We are tremendously pleased that Spin has selected CarbiCrete to help them meet their climate goals,” says CarbiCrete CEO, Chris Stern. “In addition to the carbon offset benefits offered by our technology, our carbon-negative process will be used to create valuable construction products that will further contribute to the decarbonization of the built environment.”

“Spin is committed to building sustainable and liveable 15-minute cities,” says Spin’s Director of Sustainability, Hui Wen Chan. “In addition to providing a sustainable mode of transport, our purchase of carbon removal credits from CarbiCrete is another step towards achieving our mission. It supports the scaling of an innovative technology that decarbonizes the production of concrete, which is essential for the construction of the buildings, infrastructure, roads, and transport networks that make up our cities.”

CarbiCrete recently completed a pilot-scale production project at Patio Drummond, a masonry and hardscape manufacturer in Drummondville, Quebec. The company is now moving into industrial-scale production at the same facility.
